Refreshing soil/roots of Container Figs

Hello,

I have a Hardy Chicago Fig that I'll probably keep in a container for its life. I overwintered it in a low-light, cool room, and I'm hoping it made it. No sign of green yet, but it's early here.

Anyhow, here's my question:

I'm noticing that the roots are very compacted in the very large container and the soil seems dry and not so rich anymore. Is this a safe time to take on some root pruning and overhaul the soil?

Or what other strategies would you suggest?

And finally, is there an easy way to tell if your dormant fig is still alive?

Thanks in advance!
