Length of cuttings?

How long should my cuttings be? If it is about 12 inches, is it too long? I have no problem cutting them in half, but I would like the largest possible start. Is it too long to support the newly forming roots? Thanks for all of your help. Also, they have "knobs" of newly forming shoots that must have been forming at the time of the cutting. Should I knock these off, along with leaves the will be popping out? My main concern is the health and growth of the roots.
