Planting 2 Trees in 1 Hole

| Has anyone out there tried to plant two fig trees in one hole? I've got a small crowded backyard. Wish I had at least an acre.
From advice that I've got from nurseries that sell fruit trees, this is a way to plant multiple varieties in a limited space. Also, it's suppose to have a growth reduction effect on the height and spread of the mature trees. I'm thinking about putting a Janice Seedless Kadota and a Mission tree in the same planting hole. These trees are both pretty vigorous growers. Anyone done multiple plantings of fig trees in the same hole? How do the trees grow? |

longbeachin 1: This could be one of those ideas that, when proven it works, everyone says, "Why didn't I think of that?" And if it doesn't work, what could you have lost? As Mr. Orek says on TV, "You have nothing to lose." I have seen trees in the wild sharing root space, trunk to trunk, with no apparent ill effects - go for it!.....Elder |

Well Long.., The problem is less difficult than we can think... BUT: First - Dimension of hole? (by Long.. possible, of course!). Second - All round the "hole" is there good-deep soil...or not? (Normally the roots of the fig tree are outside the tree canopy). Third - How many is deep, and is it of good quality the soil? Fourth - there are other plants all round? I don't know for wich type of plant are valid the pictures of Dave Wilson (I've not well read all), (I'm Italian and don't know well English) but I suspect that a peach tree may be quite different to a caribbean Avocado. Answer: All results are possible, but (....scientifically speaking) so may be difficult to carry reproducible results. Sergio |

The main problem to grow two or more fig plants in single pot or together in small space is not immediate., or of the few years, time by time if one is a more vigorous variety may be that subtracts food, water, and overcome the other. Good care and precise pruning may try to conserve a "not aesy" balance. Bye Sergio |

| You Plant them 18 inches apart and 30 degree inclined,so when they grow they become a perfect round bush.If you want to do more you bury a metal or plastic separator ,plate in between them so the roots do not touch one another, while growing. Also is a good idea to look for similar vigor trees, but if not Pruning will be fine. I do have six young figs planted this way in the second year and they produced a few figs last fall, enough to taste their fruits.Regards |

very good the planning similar vigour cultivar, and so good is the control by pruning of some excess of grow, (is a good way to learn). Difficult is separate the roots, a clearance of 1/16" allows perfectly the passage of the roots. However is not a balance to be maintained for 50 years. Grow and go back, grow/back ...and so on, is a way to become hard, strong, resistant to cold. S |
