Planting next to a building for nematode control?

Is this simply an old . . . er, hmmm . . . spouse's tale?

Or is there something to this oft told old advice?

But how? Wouldn't it often be too dry under a house to support roots anyway? And if the underlying water table is high and the soil moist by capillary action, wouldn't the nematodes from beyond the house simply slowly follow the fig roots in?
