This is only my second season with fig trees , but almost all of mine are in self watering containers , 5 gallon bucket size, and all have grown very well.
Google Bill's Figs to see how he makes a much larger self watering container. Also on the figs4fun message board , a member named Duane recently wrote in about SIP's , with another perhaps easier approach to making the water resevoir.
Maybe there are some commercially available self watering containers you want to use.
One key thing about bringing the tree in for the Winter is that it will need exceptionally good lighting to keep it from getting weakened by leggy growth. Some atriums would not be bright enough without supplemental lighting. You may want to continue to pinch the tips after every set of 6 to 8 new leaves to keep growth more compact.
One thing to also consider ,most figs have a cat smell that some may not find pleasant in an indoor space. Atreano to me seems to be the strongest smelling variety I have and Ronde de Bordeaux the least. I don't have as much experience as many others who will hopefully weigh in on this topic.
In PA , you must have varieties in the ground as well ?

Your idea is correct but your indoor placement is wrong. The fig tree needs to rest and go dormant. therefore you need to bring it inside but put it in a cool dark place for the winter. An unheated garage works best.
