fig wrapping/unwrapping

hey all,

I have a 4-5 year old brown turkey fig (in ground since December 08). It survived winter 08-09 with a wrapping of foam rubber pipe insulation and a garbage bag. It made it through with some tip dieback, but grew fine. It bore well, but the figs didn't ripen before frost. This year I mulched heavily with shredded leaves, tied up the branches and wrapped the tree (it's about 5 feet tall) with about 3-4 layers of burlap, and put a plastic bucket on top. I'm waiting to unwrap it until late march, but does anyone want to give me odds that I've done it right? I saw the contraptions some of you built and worried I may have underwrapped it. It's in a rowhouse garden, so fairly sheltered from the wind. I don't think temperatures have dropped below a nighttime low of 15F this year, and January total avg was around 31F.

Any thoughts?

The only thing different I would have done is put leaves inside the burlap. It should be fine, especially since this winter (it's not over yet) has been great for figs. Much better than last year and unless you are positioned on a Northern exposure I wouldn't think you had to cover it. To me the hardest part about covering figs is deciding when to remove the cover so as to not get the tree molded or overheated on warm days. By the way how do the figs taste? (
