Got my first fig

Well, I just planted my first very own fig tree. I selected an LSU Purple from a a good local nursery.

Looking forward to it producing down the road. I'm originally from California, and we had figs growing up that were awesome. I believe they were mission figs, but that was a long time ago, and my memory is going south.

Anyway, I hope the LSU Purple was a good choice and I look forward to growing this small fig tree.

Congratulations on your first fig tree! :)

From what people tell me, the LSU Purple is a good choice, but it will take a few years for the flavor of the LSU Purple to develop fully. I have one and it's done well for me. I just got it last season, so I'm waiting for it to grow up a little more. It got a few figs on it last year, but they didn't taste so good, however, by the end of the season, the later couple of figs actually had some taste to them, even though they were not great, so I'm hoping this year the figs might have a little more flavor. We'll see, as it's putting on some brebas.

I got the LSU P for fun and also got an LSU Gold just because I live in Louisiana and those are LSU's team colors. I didn't get the tiger fig because the eye is too open and it doesn't do well in the rain and humidity, or so I've been told. Mike the Tiger is the LSU team's mascot.

Do you have room for a second tree that will produce full-flavored figs for you until the LSU P is growing up?

No doubt you will do good.
You picked a good variant. I don't have this variant but it gets high marking from other figsters. Nothing bad is ever said about the LSU Purple. At least I haven't heard any.
Don't be surprised to a pick a couple figs off it this season. It could happen.

Maybe some pictures as your baby gets bigger.

I just realized I had my old zone listed on my original posting. I live in northern Alachua County in Florida (just north of Gainesville). I've got the room for more figs and plan on adding to it, but not sure if I can do it this year. I've already put in 2 pears, 2 apples, 2 nectarines and 2 peaches this year besides the fig. I think the rest of my plans will have to wait until next year.

My plan is to add a couple plums trees, some muscadine grapes a row of blackberries and blueberries, and more figs next year. I have a friend at work that I maybe able to get some cuttings off her fig tree later in the year.

I'll try and get some pics posted of the fig.
