Interesting topic. There is a considerable body of information posted within this forum regarding the root-pruning techniques used on fig trees, and why this is necessary now and then.

A poster named Al, posting under: "tapla" gives the well-reasoned science, behind root-pruning practices.

The spade-severing of the roots at the drip line will certainly control, and confine the root spread, but since I grow in containers, I have no experiences with growing in-ground. I'm just wondering if root pruning is necessary for in-ground trees....unless of course, you are going to loosen the tree's roots each year so that the tree could be bent over and buried for winter protection.

I'm sure in-ground growers will be giving you some suggestions.

Tapla is a tremendous resource. I have used his potting mix and container root pruning methods for my potted Black Jack fig. I searched but did not find what I thought I had read early on inground root pruning. I have had an inground BT for 10 years and familiar with Zone 6 fig culture, but rearranging the yard now and want to put in a Chicago Hardy and optimize its growth and production. If that means root pruning is a part of the culture then good. If setting the new fig in some kind of below grade container to confine the roots then I would work that into the replanting too.

I wish I knew more about in-ground root pruning, but I don't.
