Will the rest of the fig bush come back?

We had a hard freeze here in Albuquerque this winter. My Brown Turkey fig bushes have small leaves coming up from the bottom, but nothing on the established branches. They are both 6 years old. How do I tell if the rest of the branches have been frozen? I figure to wait until at least June to see if any leaves come on the branches.

Look closely for green buds. Best indicator. Figs can be hardy, but hard freezes can damage or kill them. Give them another month before cutting back just to be sure. Good luck!

We had 15 and 20 year old figs killed to the ground here this winter. Mine have frozen back to the ground every year. That's both Celeste and Brown Turkey.

I don't understand why they do better in PA with figs than we do here. I guess their cold is more constant. We are up and down all winter.

How do I tell if the branches are frozen or just waiting? I will keep checking for green buds and, like I said, plan to wait until June before doing anything. If they haven't budded by June, how big should I let the new growth get before cutting back the "frozen" branches?
