our fig tree's fruit is dry and tasteless

When we first moved into our house 13 years ago the fig tree in our yard had wonderful fruit. But for the past 8 years the fruit has been dry and tasteless. They drop all over the yard and our dog eats them. What can we do to make them good for human consumption? We have no idea what kind of fig it is except that they are green.
