Can you tell us your climate zone, how big is this tree, and how severely have you pruned it back each season? If it produce figs for three years, and then started to slow down, I'd check culture and growing conditions, first. It does have the potential for setting heavy crops of figs, so what changed over the last two years?

In certain areas, Root-Knot Nematodes infect the roots and causes the trees to fail. Are you fertilizing? Figs are heavy feeders....perhaps the soil has been depleted of nutrients. Maybe a root-pruning at the correct time will jump-start your tree? Is it growing in a container, or, in-ground?

Thank you for the responses! I am in zone 10, San Diego. The tree is in ground and I have pruned it every year by cutting of the fruit bearing branches. I fertilized a few times last year with compost tea from my worm bin and have been over fertilizing this year.

I've also realized that a very large ficus tree about 30 ft away has one of its main roots aimed directly at the Fig. Could it be the problem?

5.5 is definitely acidic,I would add limestone if I was you.This could be your problem.
Possible the former owner added limestone ,or crushed eggs ,anything that had calcium and magnesium.
Also check roots for nematode,they look like brown balls hanging on roots,dig some roots and check out.Adding manure tea and compost makes it even more acidic?
