re-potting a root-bound Peter's Honey?

Hi all. I'm in PA right on the cusp of zone 6/7, and I have a healthy Peter's Honey fig in a 5-gal pot that I purchased from a greenhouse with a few fig buds on it. The guy at the greenhouse instructed me to get it home, harden it, then wait a full year before repotting. It's hardened off nicely and happy outdoors, but the roots are SO crowded in there, I can hardly stick my finger down far enough to check soil moisture.

I don't want to go by my gut because this is my first year with figs, so I wanted to get some advice from experience. Should I leave it be or repot?
