Struggling young fig

We got a very young fig as a gift this winter, basically as a single 3' stick stuck into a small pot, with no leaves.

We put it in a slightly bigger pot and put it out in the spring and it seemed to be doing really well, growing a few big green healthy-looking leaves.

But then we moved it into the ground and within a few weeks the leaves started to turn yellow and whither -- here are some current photos: http://imgur.com/a/m4BC4

Any ideas what's wrong? I saw earlier posts about yellow leaves suggest underwatering, but we have clay soil and have connected it to our drip irrigation. If anything, I wonder if the clay soil is keeping it too wet. Would fertilizing help?

We live near San Jose, so recent temperatures have had highs in the 80s and lows in the 60s. The tree gets sun for most of the day.

Thanks

Daniel
