The fig is on a slight mound, hidden under the foliage, so that should help dig it up with a decent root ball.

I think your plan is a good one. That's what I would do.

Thanks Centurion. I hate to interrupt the growth of this tree but my lemons come first. I may be able to put the fig in a location that will allow me to build a bird exclusion net around it so maybe this will be better in the long run. I like to wait until the figs are dead ripe before picking and that just lets the birds beat me to them.

If you wait till late winter/early spring to move it, there should be minimal interruption in it's growth. Prune it back, throw some compost in the hole before you plant it, and water it enough to keep the root zone damp next spring. It should come back gangbusters.
