| Hello.
I am dealing with a Fig tree that was transplanted last Fall, Outdoors, and protected for the winter. Three New Shoots are growing along side of the transplanted Base tree. Should they be "CUT" or should I leave nature alone ? Bob G |

| If you don't want the extra shoots I would go ahead and cut them now. It's up to you if you want it to make a bush or trained to a single trunk. |
|
| I have these on all of my fig trees. Will these shoots produce fruit next year? |
|
| Shoots will most likely start to set figs when they mature...usually 2nd-3rd year. If you want to train your fig plant into a bush, let the basal shoots grow into lower branches. If you want a single-stem tree, cut the shoots. Better yet, air-layer those shoots, and grow new trees from the extra wood that you will cut off if you are training a single-stem tree. Search on this forum for photos on how to do an air-layer. Check thread: "How The Greeks Do It" for photos of the air-layering process. Now you can increase your number of trees. Good luck...happy growing. Frank |

| That depends where you live. If in cold climates outside ideal fig climate ,one trunk fig is a risky proposition, and it will be usually dead next Spring. If so leave 5 to 8 trunks in the Fall and reduce to 3 to 5 ,the following Spring after frost is gone. |

| Here in Texas the best are the bushes not the trees as they seem to stay low enough to be able to harvest the fruit without using a ladder. I keep thinking about cutting my tree to the ground as I cannot reach very high on one leg and my neighbor will not come over to pick them as he feels that he should not come and pick unless I go get him and that does not work out so well so they either go to waste or the birds enjoy them. |

| I have a new fig, planted this Spring. All of the lower leaves got black spots and fell off. Now I have nice leaves at the top and lower branches at the base with no leaves. 1. What did I do or not do to cause the black spots and leaf loss? Watered well for first month then backed down to once or twice a week there after. 2. the lower brances that have no leave are coming out of the main trunk right at the ground level - did I plant it too deep? Should I cut those leafless branches off? Help! THe plant is about 2 feet tall. |

| You did nothing wrong,it is the Rust formed because humidity in the air,and rain. Rust is not a Problem. The tree will recover and grow just fine. |

| I have three shoots under two of my brown turkey trees. All are about 2 1/2 feet. It is a gift for a new tree I will air-layering them. The question is when should I do that. What is the best time to do it. I rather wait until I harvest all the fruits. Especially I have one shoot with one fig on it. Can the air-layering work during the dormant time. |

| I noticed one of shoots under the brown turkey is coming from the soil not from the tree trunk. It 5 inches apart. Does this mean it developed it own roots. If that is the case it will be easy to transplant it in another pot. That shoot is about one year old and it is over a foot tall. |

| Yes dig it out,and pull it hard instead to cut it,it will come out more intact with more roots. As for air layering, now it is the right time. Any later and you will have problems ,and no time to root properly. Of course one precaution is in order when you pull out a sucker with roots from ground: Keep it in shade till it is established and it start growing on it's own. |
