Containerizing Ground-growing Figs

aprilminkler

I have three figs which have been in-ground for two years. Last year they got so big I had to climb on a ladder to harvest figs. I thought I could just keep them pruned back this year but was told the only way to limit their height would be to containerize them, limiting the size of the root ball by placing burlap around them. But I don't want to kill them by digging them up. Anybody out there with figs could give me some input? I would rather just get a taller ladder than kill these guys, which are growing back from the ground after last year's growth, very woody, didn't sprout. I read this is normal. Help?
