Dividing new growth from base of old fig tree

I have a 20 year old, 15+ foot tall fig that was too big to cover over the winter and it died back to the ground. It is now sprouting many new shoots, about a foot tall each, out of the large root system. Several friends would like new plants from this tree. I tried doing dormant cuttings 2 years ago with no luck. Would now be a good time to remove these shoots and try to root them? I'm pretty sure the roots will be too large to dig with them. Should I put them in rooting hormone and keep damp in the shade and hope for the best?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

thanks,
Betsy
