Best to pot up now because over time the medium will dry out and the roots will turn brown and die. It is a beautiful airlayer to waste. Regarding the figlets, I've had some airlayers mature the figs as though the limb was still attached to mama. On others, they fell off.
I would not worry about the figs on the airlayer at this point. The priority is getting the airlayer separated and potted up so that it will survive. By the way, if this is your first airlayer, after it gets potted, you need to place it in the shade and cover with a plastic tent for up to a week and gradually wean from the tent. If you don't, the immature root ball won't support the leaf growth and the leaves may fall off.

Hi noss, I used sphagnum moss

sphagnum peat sorry

I usually pinched off some leaves after I have planted the air layered branch. The rest of the chores are as per Leon's recommendations.

Are you talking about the green stuff that's coarse, or the fine soil-like peat? I'm never quite clear about what people mean.

Ryecooder...How long has this air layer been going? When did first roots appear and how long did you let it sit to get to this point.

The roots look fantastic, by the way.

I set up an air layer about 20 days ago and have yet to see any movement through the peat to indicate new roots.

I air layerd mine on May 24 and I could see roots around two weeks after

Most of the root mass was towards the lighted side I would try putting some holes in the tinfoil the side of dimes to see what happens next time
