I think it's to late

Ok, i live in lower westchester & did not wrap this winter past. I have 2 trees side by side, 1 was here when i bought the house, the other was a transplant i brought from my last house which came via Italy by my great grandmother.

My grannies is doing ok, it's about 4 feet high & is sprouting new shoots from the ground, the other has nothing but a few buds at the root base!! it has yielded figs before but i think this past harsh winter finally did it in. the branches look and feel as it it was set on fire, so far all branches i have cut back do not produce that milky substance. I will come back & post a pic tomorrow morning, but when do you know when it's time to call it in & cut it out & buy another??

If you aren't getting sap (the milky fluid) then I would start scratching the bark lower and lower looking for any green. If there are buds at the root base pushing forth new growth, its likely that is all you will get growing this year and everything above pretty close to that is dead.

Sorry wish there was better news.

That looks like it was a really nice tree Nick. I sure hope its not dead.

Here is what I would do.

Time to get out your pruning gear.

Start cutting away all the dead wood starting with the top and the ends of the branches. Don't worry about over pruning just start cutting out all of the dead wood until you hit something thats alive.
If the tree is dead it will be gone by the time you are done and if its not dead all of the dead wood will be gone and it will be ready to put on new growth once it finally leafs out.

I would really prune it back--back to good wood. If might be that all the above wood is, in fack, dead. But figs will often initiate new growth at the base from roots that are still alive. Yes, it should have happened by now. But our weather has been less than "normal". In case you haven't noticed, it's been cloudy and raining for over a month now WITH ALMOST NO SUN. My two (unprotected) figs also suffered more than usual after last winter. One initiated new growth from the roots earlier in the season and the other only recently has started to initiate growth. I decided to containerize them both for the season for the time being until I decide where to ultimately put them. Good luck!

@dieseler, obviously the ginny part is by birth, lol.

yeah i don't know what happened, if you look at the before pix there was nothing alive above that little stump. no green, a little white but not runny.

my buddy has a tree, didn't wrap it, he has million leaves & 2 green figs the size of a plum already!!!
