Garden Alert

I think it's fair to say that a lot of us grow things other than figs, so I apologize for going off topic, but I think the word needs to be spread about a serious disease.
Rutgers has issued a warning about a fungus attacking members of the Nightshade family in the northeast - tomatoes, potatoes, etc. It's the same fungus that caused the Irish Potato Famine and our wet weather is helping it spread.

Under What's New, click on Alert for home gardeners: Irish Potato Famine...
The fungicide mentioned is also known as Daconil. Home Depot has the Ortho brand which sells it as Ortho Garden Disease Control.

RE: Garden Alert

This disease cannot be treated. Once the plants are infected they have to be destroyed. They cannot be cured; the plant will eventually die - and allowing them to remain in the garden will result in more spores being produced. It is a devastating disease, and the only option is prevention.
I wouldn't have posted here if this wasn't something that as many people as possible should know about as soon as possible. I dislike the idea of constantly spraying my tomatoes, but I dislike loosing them even more.

RE: Garden Alert

Thanks for the heads-up thing!
I have never experienced this 'late blight'; though I have
heard of the famous (potato) Irish famine (now I know it
was because of it!).
This is a very serious problem. Rutgers is a good
and reputable UN for growing veggies/tomatoes (think of
the most famous JERSEY-TOMATO - aka the Ramapo).
I have grown tomatoes before, but not for the last 2-3
years. My figs are taking over! However, for the VERY
fisrt time, here in NJ, USA, I have a very few potatoes
growing, just a survival experiment thing. So far so good...
