I do not want to bring bad news but be aware that grafting is a sure way to introduce the Fig mosaic in your multi fig.
A single deasesed scion in your mix will contaminate the whole tree,and the other scions as the sap flow back and forth..So that you know before you start.Regards

Thanks for the info. One more question. Most sources on chip budding say to cover the scion completely with the tape. This particular site shows the "bud" uncovered. Is this uncovered bud only for fig trees? And do you recommend chip budding high or low on the plant or does it not matter?

No, this method is also used to graft another trees like peach-trees, and is used to better handling , improve and test the grafting status.
High or low ? Is the matter, only is used to achieve the desired shape.
