Perhaps, in producing hundreds of figs, the tree has overextended itself. This autumn/winter, consider pruning the tree back about 20% all around. Better to have 50 good figs than 200 figs that never ripen.

Thanks guys. I think it produces Celeste figs.
I will try to prune it as directed.
Any particular fertilizer helpful? We live on some fairly rough clay soil.

If you do fertilize use starter fertilizer low in nitrogen and high in phosphorus like 10-20-15 and use some compost or manure in autumn. Where you located.

BSPT:You need to thin your tree.
It is too dense,that is why it doesn't ripe.
Also check soil for if it is too acidic and add limestone ,to bring it at PH7.

The most likely possibility is that the heat and drought of 2011 caused it to drop the figs prematurely. Celeste has a tendency under very hot, dry conditions to drop fruit and extra leaves. Although this year has not been quite as hot and dry as 2011 thus far, we are still in a moderate drought in Austin, Texas. I have several Celeste trees. The bubbler (irrigation) head under one of the trees was clogged and I wasn't aware of it. The first sign of trouble was that the tree dropped many of the figs and some of the leaves. The other Celeste trees with adequate water retained all of the figs and leaves. If you still have many figs on the tree, try giving the tree supplemental water, if you are not already doing so.

I have 7 fig trees planted in pots and the pots are holed and are planted in the garden soil. I don't allow them to grow over 6 feet to stay manageable, probably they spread about 4 feet wide. I think we have very dry season and I am glad to read this post I started to water them 2 gallons for each tree. I am going to keep doing that twice a week unless it rains.So far the growth is vigorous and the leaves are green and healthy.

I've observed drought and/or excessive heat to delay ripening in figs and American persimmons.
