I posted this on another forum but it could be relevant here too

anyway went to Bensonhurst.

saw so many fig trees like nowhere else. Every other house had one.

Sicilian lady lived here 30 + years. she spoke no english and she gave me 2 cutting. I do not understand why 2nd gen Italian American become so unfriendly (her daughter). In Bay Ridge etc they never ask me where I am from even if my name is obviously Italian. Maybe my accent from Milan is way different and they do not know, while people born in Italy would know.

Anyway her fig had lots of fruit. she did not know the variety name. they ripen almost to black but unlike the nearby figs the ostiole was red even when the fig are unripe. I tasted a sei ripped one and I liked it Any idea what it could be?

Chinese family bought house from Italian American in Sunset Park and it cane with a tree. They use unripe figs to make soup with pork and potatoes, and possibly leaves for tea.

here is a link to biggest garden store in Milan. Most variety names are different than here. I recognize Turco (Turkish) and Panachee. But no what here in the US carry Italian names like Celeste or Ischia. I suspect the Italian cultivar names that are used here do not exist in Italy, they may be no name random figs brought across the pond ages ago that have been propagated and distributed here
