Branch from a Huge Fig Tree in Baltimore (pics)

I just got back from a business trip to Baltimore.
While I was down there I went to Little Italy and I saw a HUGE fig tree.
It must have been at least 15 feet tall.
The main branches were as thick as soda cans.

It was loaded with tons of fruit.
There must have been over a hundred figs on that tree.
They weren't fully developed yet, but the biggest ones were the size of golf balls.

I knocked on the front door of the house and asked the owner if I could take a branch from the tree.
He was really nice and brought out shears and a wet paper towel for me.
I cut a branch and took it back to my hotel, and then I brought it back home with me after my business trip.

Now I'm wondering how to make it root.
I pinched off the fruit and the terminal bud.
I have it sitting in a cup of water in a room that is bright but out of direct sunlight.
The leaves are starting to wither (12 hours in my suit case didn't help).
I hope this little branch doesn't die.
Is there anything else I should do to help this branch live and take root?

Joe

if you go back to that tree next try and airlayer it for better results. I am doing that right now with two branches. you could chill in for at least one or two weeks to force it to go dormant. this stat is more stable when rooting. keeping it in water will also do if you keep the water clean, I rooted 4 cuttings this way also. When you start to see the little white bumps pot it up so that roots form faster.

Fall 2007 (me) and fall 2008(another fig-nut),
did similarly aquire (~24, between the 2 of us them nuts)
dormant fig cuttings from a Greektown in Baltimore MD.
While truly unkown, I am positive (and hopeful), that
at least 1 (or 2) will stand out as a good and unique Greek fig.

Hi frozenjoe,
Stupid me, I forgot to mention some things...,
First of all good luck with your MD Little Italy fig.
From your (GREEN) cutting pic, I would cut OFF
both fruit and leaves asap. Then pot up under some
moisture retaining (but vented) dome (e.g. a plastic bag).
Also do a quick search with 'green cuttings' as key words,
on this FF for some more detailed info.

Yup, I also got some cuttings from Greektown Tarpoon Springs FL.

Here is a list of Little Italy's.
