You can wait or do it now.

Your only worry is making sure their is enough roots that it comes out whole as not to disturb the growth of the plant. Ripping roots is not too big of a deal as long as it is not too much. If it does not come out whole or seems a bit hard to pull out, I would wait until dormant.

There is no harm in waiting.

Your fig will be very hard to be kept happy in California ,in a pot.
It belongs in ground if you want easy care.

Thanks for the tips. I wish I could put it in the ground, but I just don't have any soil area to put it in.
