Help!! My husband tripped on my beautiful fig tree!

He broke off one of its larger branches that was full of figs. The tree is young and only three feet tall. It was already trampled by my dogs last year and survived. I have two concerns: 1) part of the stem ripped with the branch (like a 4 inch section (from the break down along the trunk). I tentatively wrapped a moist paper towel around the break, but I'm not sure if this will do more harm than good. I also took the branch and wrapped it in moist paper towels and put them in a plastic bag in my kitchen. Any chance that the branch will root? Also, what can I do for the damaged tree? Any help would be greatly appreciated!! It is a Peter's Honey fig and the branch was loaded with figs!!

If the branch is complety off then remove all the figs and most if not all the leaves so it will concentrate all the energy into rooting. If you have rooting hormone apply it to the branch and put in soil. Keep the branch in shade or inside for several weeks. Cover the tear in the branch in fungicide to keep fungus from attacking it. Figs are survivors and it will live.

Here is a picture. Thanks for the advice! I did what you said to the branch. I don't have antifungal stuff for the tree though. Should I go get some?

Ouch; I broke a nail!

Figs are survivors too.

Looking at the pic; it must have been a narrow "Y" branch.
It should self-heal pretty soon.
A covering with some pruning tar (or eq., may help).
A few years from today, only a slight scar will be visible and else forgotten...

Thank you for all your help! I ordered the pruning tar and will put it on as soon as I get it. It seems to be fine (no drooping leaves, etc.). I cut all the figs and leaves off the branch and will cross all fingers and toes!
