I think you can rule out the small toddler under the age of one -- they wouldn't have the choppers necessary for that kind of bite.

I would say a bird but the bite marks are not jagged enough. It may look like a couple of chubby-chunky caterpillers, they can do this much damage very fast..

It appears to be a single bite - so seems to be something with large front teeth. Not sure anything on my list has that attribute.

Jon: How about a rat? A friend of mine has her figs decimated by rats on a regular basis. They have the big front teeth you mentioned.

From a medical perspective, have to agree with Gene. The "toddler" under one is referred to as an "infant". Their teeth wouldn't even come close to the size of the Billy Bobs that viciously violated that fig.

I think Leon is right, but don't thin they are native here. The teeth nned to be about 1/2" wide.

Whatever they are, I'd avoid the orchard at night.

Looks like its time for an all night spot light party either that or set some large Hav-a-Hart traps and bait with figs. Just how big is the fig that got munched on?
It looks like a pretty good size bite. Have any neighbor kids crawling around at night? Hope you find the source before they decide to eat more than just the low ones.
