Need advice on reviving poisoned fig tree

My wife and I moved into a new house about two months ago. On the property is a fairly well established fig tree about 15 feet wide and 10 feet tall. The previous owner said she accidentally poisoned the tree with an over zealous use of weed killer nearby that got in the tree's roots. Almost all of the foliage it gone. I've seen Google Street view pictures of it and it was once very dense and lush. Now it looks like mostly sticks. It tries to put out new leaves but they usually don't end up lasting. I've seen a couple grow to full size only to fall off. Despite this, it still produced a large number of figs this summer.

What I'm wondering is, is there anything I can be doing to help this tree recover, or recover faster? I'd love to see it return to its former glory and I'd hate to see it die. I've already removed the dead branches. They were already so rotted they pulled right off (4" diameter branches). The remaining branches seem sturdy and healthy. Any advice?
