Falling Figlets - please help
| | |
Posted by hoosier2b (My Page) on Tue, Aug 19, 08 at 8:14
| Hi everyone, this is my first year growing fig trees. I planted 3 different varieties in the spring and all are doing well, except for my Celeste. I went outside the other day and found 6 nickel-size or so unripe figlets on the ground. Yesterday was even worse, as I found about a dozen. At this point there may be only 10 or so left on the tree. There haven't been any weather extremes, and Celeste has been watered regularly as they others. I've followed others advice and had pinched the tips when needed, etc. I can't understand it. Does anyone know what is going on and what I should do? I'm heartbroken. My others are doing wonderfully. Thanks in advance. |

| hi fignut, No the weather has actually been very nice, with some deep rains one or two times a week, other days humid. |

hoosier2b Are you in zone 2b? I am in zone 5 and have similar problem with dropping figs (unlike last year). We are having rainy and cooler summer this year and that may be attributing to dropping figs and also may be because my trees are younger (2+ year). |

My Celeste is doing the same but not as extreme, I thought they drop a few to thin out some of the fruit. Rye |

| Up until the point of droppong off, the figs looked fine. They hadn't grown much in the past few weeks, but I'd read on this wonderful site that this can be normal and that their growth could increase suddenly in the course of a few days. Now I've got only about 6 figs remaining on the entire tree, I'm so upset. My Negronne (sp?) however, is covered in figs and their size increases each day, and my Brown Turkey has a substantial number as well, although they haven't shown any increase in size in a few weeks. I'm baffled by it all. |

| If your Celeste follows the way my two have done, next yr it will not drop as many as this yr, but it will drop figs for a while (2 or 3 yrs. that's my $00.02 Don't give up on it! Cecil |

| I agree with Cecil's $00.02. I have a young Celeste that lost most of it's figs. I asked a friend that has the original tree if his figs fall off. He said that when it was young the figs fell off, but now the fruit stays on the tree. His Celeste tree is 15+ years old. Another thing you have to worry about with Celeste figs is too much rain when the fruit starts to rippen. We have had way more rain fall in Arkansas this Ausust than we usually have. My friend with the old Celeste tree said the rain has spoiled his fruit this year. Vern |

Good point Vern, We have old farmers around here with 40-50 yr old Celeste trees that never water them, and they don't drop their figs BTW the weather here can hit 105 degrees in July & August That is why I told hoosier2b not to give up! Cecil |
