Caring for Figs

I planted two - 2ft tall fig trees last year in the fall (from Lowes) in my south-facing backyard. They are about 50 ft apart with some other fruit trees in between. Not knowing anything I did not do anything to protect them other than put a 3 ft chicken wire around them to protect them from rabbits. I thought the winter killed them but they came back even looking healthier. I am in Grand Rapids.

After reading the posts here, I am wondering if I should protect them this time for the winter. My backyard is about 40' deep surrounded by tall, mostly cottonwood trees. I'm wondering if the trees are 'protected' by a this 'buffer' in the winter an causing the temps not to dip too low.

One of the plants have about 4 figs but are still green and about the size of a quarter and its already almost September. The other has no fruits.

Someone here mentioned about pot-grown figs doing better but am curious how big of a pot are we talking here.

Thanks
