You can grow your figs into pots and they will perform as good as figs in the ground. I USE 16 Inches pots for mature figs. Use the drill and drill holes 1/4 to 1/2 inch in the lower half of the pot. Fill the pot with top soil+moss+perlite and plant the tree. Now dig a hole in the garden in sunny location and plant the hole pot. I plant 2/3 to 3/4 of the pot in good garden soil and keep watering if there is no rain. They will grow wild and produce lots of figs. Comes the winter get your shovel around the pot and clear the roots outside the pot. You will be amazed how much roots traveled through the holes into the garden soil. Pull the pot and take it to winter safe place like garage or basement.
The advantage of this method
1-Fig in a pot protected from freezing weather,
2-Fig has the entire garen to send its roots for water and nutritions.
3-I don't need to replant my figs every three years and trimm the crowded root in the pot if the pot has no holes.
4- I don't allow my fig trees to grow taller tham 6 to 7 feet so they can fit into the house.
I have 18 trees planted that way.
The only problem is the time and efforts to dig them out and take them into the house. When I had three trees it was easy but with 18 I spend one week doing it.

Anyway, thanks for the advise foolishpleasure. you must have a lot of garage space. I am in Z5 so it does dip down below 32 here. Fortnately my garage is insulated. But I hardly have room to put the 2 plants.
