Iranian Fig Variety Research & Questions

I was recently introduced to dried figs from the Estahban area in Iran. They were extremely flavorful. My first impression was that they were hard and wrinkled, but after biting into one - well, it was very good! They are smaller than the dried 'Turkish figs.' Estahban is the area where many of the dried figs come from in Iran. The fig used for drying is a Smyrna type and does require the fig wasp to set fruit. Here is a quote from a book called 'Iranian Entomology' by Cyrus Abivardi ' "Pollination of figs by caprifigs, which has been known in Iran since antiquity, is carried out annually in fig producing regions of this coutry, e.g. Estahbanat. It is realized either by hanging the beaded green fruits of wild figs in the tree, or putting them inside small baskets placed between the brances of cultivated trees (see Esmaili 1983:; Fazeli 1987)."

In my research I located the Estahban Fig Research Station which has a collection of figs. It must be their equivalent to the U.C. Davis facility. I don't know much else about it.

I am curious about other Iranian figs - the common edible varieties. There has been some limited discussion on Iranian figs in previous posts. Does anyone have specific names to recommend or varieties from Iran that could be shared at some point in time? Previous posts have mentioned Anjeer, Does anyone know anything about the White Fig of Kan sold by the Pars Produce company?

I have located a few interesting websites that shed some information on figs and fig growing in Iran.

1) Encyclopædia Iranica - good article on fig related topics - http://www.iranica.com/newsite/index.isc?Article=http://www.iranica.com/newsite/articles/unicode/v9f6/v9f614.html

2) Estahban fig co - pdf file on their products - http://www.golden-fig.com/files/EFC-Products.pdf

3) Fars Fig Production Packing Co - the best pictures that I have found of the Estahban fig producing area in Iran. I like the pictures of the orchards and especially the picture of the tree with the white skirt for harvesting "fig tree2.jpg." http://www.farsfig.com/gallery.html

4) The best document so far that I have found on fig varieties is "Complementary Study of Major Characteristics of Edible Fig (Ficus Carica L.) Genotypes of Fars Province" There are some charts in English with names further down in the document. There is also information about the climate. It is mostly in Persian, but very interesting http://www.sid.ir/fa/VEWSSID/J_pdf/56113870113.pdf
