Fiddle Leaf Ficus Shrub and Tree

I just bought a beautiful fiddle leaf ficus shrub and was told by the garden nursery that I could turn it into a tree. Can someone tell me if this is true and how to go about this? Do I basically start at the bottom and remove some of the old branches?
