To prune or chop?

From a cutting this fig grew to 7' the first year. I planted it and it never grew. (Same area that the former owner dumped drain oil.) It produced a few yellow figs.
I dug it up yesterday and found the root ball about the same size it was when I planted about 10 years ago. I hosed off the old soil and potted it with organic soil.
Can this be saved? If I chop this about in half will it branch from the existing trunk or just sprout a new single branch on top? Any suggestions?
