How Does Oiling Work?

About a week ago I oiled the most of the figs on my Chicago Hardy fig tree. Now all of those figs are purple and will probably be ripe soon. The figs that I didn't oil are all still green.

How does oiling work? Does the sun warm up the fig more with oil on it? Is it because the oil blocks air from hitting the eye?

And, will figs that have been oiled be as sweet and juicy as figs that are left to ripen on their own?

Hello,
Here are a couple of abstracts that talk about the mechanism that triggers the fruit ripening. Basically it is ethylene gas. The age of the unripe fruit is also a factor, that is - if the oil is applied at an earlier point in the fruits development, it will not ripen properly.
