Need help diagnosing ficus leaf stem problem!

Hi,
I have an indoor ficus benjamina. The plant seems to have some sort of disease. On the stems of the leaves there are small white / brown waxy looking spots (as shown in the photo). They are hard and not furry / do not look like insects. After a while a lot of the infected leaves turn yellow and drop.
Can anyone help identify the problem and solution? Much appreciated if you can.
