brick house figs

Hi,

I'd like to add some figs this fall and have a few questions for the fig pro's.

I was thinking of planting about 3 figs along the back side of my house (brick). My concern is; will the roots mess with the foundation and find their way into septic pipes, etc. and I don't want the trees to get above the roof line, which is about 11'. So I suppose I am looking for naturally dwarfing varieties.

The back of the house gets about 5 - 6 hours of sun.

The varieties my local nursery fella carries are:

Black Violette

Celeste

Brown Turkey

Italian Golden Honey

Also, I'm afraid that they may not be very attractive in late fall/ winter when the leaves are gone, being against the house and all. Please share your thoughts on this and thanks in advance!

I have had two Celeste and one Brown Turkey fig growing alongside my brick home for 30 years, and have had no problems with roots disturbing the foundation or the concrete basement floor. The fig trees have grown very tall, at least 25 feet, but have not been a problem. I am planning to remove the tallest trunks this fall, to control height, but the limbs are flexible enough that I can harvest from the tallest limbs by bending them. Mine are along the South wall, where they get sun most of the day. As for "naturally dwarfing", I doubt that this is a reality. The tree will grow and grow, unless you impose your will by keeping it trimmed. As for variety, Celeste is my favorite, and it has done better in that location than the BT.
