What is the best way to winterize my fig tree?

Our well established fig tree took a big hit last winter due to the unexpected cold. We had to cut it way back in the spring and now have sturdy new growth and even a reasonable harvest of figs. We want to be better prepared this year. I've read of a thousand ways to winterize a fig tree. Growing up I remember people packing the base with mulch and wrapping the bundled branches in burlap, but that was it. Do I need to also wrap it in a tarp? What is the purpose? To keep out moisture? To me that would promote moisture retention. Any suggestions?
