Ohhh...They sure look delicious.

But, they don't look black to me, though they are quite dark, some more so than others.

Why do they call brown figs black and green figs white?

I saw a truly black fig on Saturday at a nursery where I picked up three new babies. It really was black--looked lik a lump of charcoal hanging on the tree. I got a baby one of those. Wanted to eat the fig, too, but I refrained from asking and the man didn't offer. :)

Hi Noss This fig was given to me by my uncle who has since passed. When he gifted all he said was fico Nero or black fig with no varietal name, I dubbed it a black unknown I believe, before I even got fruit and have called it that ever since.The figs do get a little darker when left to ripen a little more but I do understand what you are saying. Growing up, most if not all family members would refer to their figs by color and or a province where they came from. Proper naming was not a priority as long as they were of good quality, taste,productive and would make it through the winter well. Hope this helps and doesn't add more confusion ;)

No, it doesn't add more confusion. If someone told me they had a black fig that taste like heaven, thrives in the heat, is strong and productive and loves the rain, humidity and never splits or sours, I wouldn't care what it was called, I'd just beg for it. :)

Thanks Noss, I have passed a few cuttings out and hopefully some with more experience can help with ID in time. I agree with you 100% as I have no intentions of selling figs at this time and if I did I would just list it as an unknown and describe the characteristics the best I can. ;)
