Small harvest this year

Hi. I have a fig tree that is 17 years old. Normally, we get so many figs that we don't know what to do with them all. However, this year things have been a lot different. We got less than 10% of the total that we normally get, and the figs are ripening a lot later too. Most of the time, the figs are done by early August. However, this year the figs didn't start *ripening* until mid-August, and the tree is producing figs even into September.

I can think of two possible reasons for a reduced yield:

1) We had an unusually cold January--it got down to 7 degrees.

2) I did some extensive pruning (which I don't normally do) on the tree in March.

Which of these factors would probably be the bigger reason? Or could there possibly be another reason? Also, why are the figs ripening so much later this year?

Thanks for any help with this. Anyway, at least we're getting lots of wild muscadines, so that's some consolation for the lack of figs. :)
