Looks like the Doozy is the last one to produce ripe figs.
Weather has been 40's at night and 60's daytime with loads of rain. Picked this fig yesterday morning.
32 degrees last night so i doubt i'll get any more.
All the figs in this pic are 11 months old and younger.

| Hi Cazimere, beautiful figs and plants. Never heard of Doozy before----that's a new one for me! |

Hi Cazmere: Like your blue planters and the young trees in them. What gallon size are the planters and how old the trees in them ? I sympatize with your nostagial. I am still picking some nice ripe ones. Here in cenral Oregon, we are a bit later and slower than else where. Howevr there are a lot of splits around the eyes and now some dark green discoloring, in the same area on the top. A sure sign that spoilage is setting in; With all the rain and cool weather and not much sun. Best, Janoyan |

Hi back at ya both : ) The blue tubs are around 10 gallon. All the plants in the blue tubs were started from cuttings 11 months ago and they all have figs on them. The Doozy is piece from an unknown fig that i was allowed to get a start from before it was bulldozed by the local fire company so they could expand. The house where the fig was planted was also bulldozed. The owner was in his 80's or 90's and told me the fig was there when he was a child. |

Thanks casimere for you reply. It is quite amazing to see such early response in 11 months. What do you feel them figs ? Janoyan |

| How well do your blue buckets hold up? I saw some at Lowe's this year and thought about using them as planters but was afraid they would quickly get brittle and crack. Lisa zone 9a |

| Looks like your Bull--Doozy fig has a "stained meat" characteristic. The meat layer between the skin and the pulp on most figs is usually white. It has been my experience that whenever a fig's pulp stains the meat it is a sign of a very good fig. Congrats on your find (save). Dan |

| Janoyan, I'm growing them in Expert Gardener, organic potting mix. I think i might have fed them a couple times during the summer when i fed my maters. I did give them one dose of Super Bloom in early June. Next year i'll give them their dose of Super Bloom earlier. Maybe the beginning of May. Lisa, I got those buckets at Lowes this summer. They had two sizes. 20 gal & 10 or 12 gal. I got the smaller ones. They look like they should hold up a while. At 5$ apiece, i don't mind if they only last 3-5 years. Dan, it is a sweet wonderful tasting fig. I got to eat many off the original tree while i was digging up the two i brought home : ) |

| Jon has posted a picture of a ripe Violette Dauphine fig on his forum which has this same "meat staining" characteristic.......see link below. He praises its taste highly. Meat staining seems to be the mark of a good fig......it is harder to see in cultivars with amber pulp. When I hunt for new figs, I get very excited when I see one that is closed or tight-eyed, its pulp is full, and its meat is stained.....those seem to be real winners in my yard. Dan |

Ahh Caz thats a very nice arragement you have there . I saw similar containers at menards and i just might get a few for some of mine as they also had black ones which will help warm a few longer season ones i have that need the heat that will be a challenge for me, i just have to watch the watering of them which i always do cause i have the time. I just saw the bigger ones only but will make trip to Lowes to see if they have the smaller 12 gallon ones as the newer plants will stay in them instead of useing bigger pots for spacing in garage, it will enable me to fit perhaps a few more newer plants, they seem like they will last the time you mentioned and for 5 bucks how can 1 go wrong ! Thanks for shareing those pictures and i look forward to see more of them next season. ; ) Best Health Martin |

| One tip i should like to share about growing figs in containers. I use a coarse growing medium that drains quickly so for drainage i only drill 3 small 1/4" holes, not in the bottom, but 1/8" up from the bottom on the side, so the pot does not sit on the drainage holes. I then tear a small piece of sponge, 1"x1", and use a small stick or dowel to push the sponge into the hole so half the sponge is inside and half sticking outside the hole. This way when i water, i can pour water into the pots and the sponges keep the water from gushing out the holes before the growing medium has a chance to absorb the water. This especially helps during the really hot months. If your getting lots of rain and you notice standing water in the pot, just pull out a sponge or two. If the sponges become clogged with silt, put new clean bits in : ) |

| It has taken me several months, but I have finally realized that I have to read EVERY, SINGLE POST or I will miss little bits like this buried deep in a thread that, otherwise, seems very general in nature. Very clever tip. Thanks, Caz! C.J. |

| Martin, i thought about getting black containers too but i'm afraid they'd cook and dry out too fast in july & august where i am, so i'm going to "Dress" my containers in black garbage bags in spring to jump-start them until it gets hot. : ) |
