It depends on the size of your plants. Also, if you bring them in I would not suggest bringing them back out after as they will get a temp shock.

I doubt there will be frost in October. If they are outside now just put some extra mulch around the base.

If not keep them in the basement for the winter.

My garage is attached so there's no need to drop them in the basement.
Besides, My basement is finished so that's out of the question. LOL

I went ahead and stacked them all in the garage yesterday like I have been doing the last couple years.
I have many young plants and considering I won't be back home till a few days before Thanksgiving ( and the advice from other members ) I thought it just might be better to take them inside now. That or risk a chance or two of the November frost.

My Father will be watching them and water them once every other week or so as needed to keep them from going fully dry.

This has worked well the last couple years. My only concern was is it too ealry to take them inside. I guess better safe than sorry.

A couple nights of frost is not a problem, but if night temperatures drop to the 20's which is possible in November, then you're taking a big risk.
I let them go dormant before I store them away, so I don't think your trees are yet dormant. I would move the smaller pots in, since these are the ones that get hit by the freeze the most. The larger trees can wait until you come back.

They're all in the garage and I'm in Rapid City, S.D. now.

I think I took them in a bit too early last year also. I only lost a couple young common ones.
