Care for young fig in container

Hello,

I am a new fig owner. My tree is about 3 ft. tall and it was given to me by my grandfather. He had fig trees his whole life but unfortunately now he has dementia and does not remember how to care for this tree. Therefore I cannot let it die, it has too much meaning to me.

Anyways, I had the tree since the beginning of the summer and it was doing very well. Even grew 3 figs which never ended up ripening. I brought it in to the garage last week thinking it was getting to cold, and all the leaves died off. I am afraid I killed it! I know they go dormant but did I force it in to dormancy too early? Also, my garage isn't that dark. Do I need to cover it with newspaper or something to block the light?

I was also wondering when would be a good time to repot it?

Thank you for your help!

Marisa
