Pot-up and/or Repot Timing

The Negronne I bought a couple of months ago has one fig on it that should be ripe any day now. I wanted to eat this fig before doing any kind of rank-beginner potting work that might kill the fig -- not to mention the tree. But I'm feeling pressured about the potting work, because when I bought the tree, the seller cautioned me to pot up soon as the roots were beginning to show at the bottom holes. I have found instructions on this forum for re-potting to prune the roots -- in the early spring -- but no info as to when to pot up. Is it okay to pot up now and would I hurt the tree if I also did the prune-root work now as well? (I'm in southern California, zone 10.)

Also, I wanted to post a photo as I see others have done, but there's nothing on this page to indicate how.
