The tree should do well in Maryland, but it does get pretty cold in the winter there.
You don't want to plant it outside, yet. How large is the tree?

If it is under 12 inches tall you probably don't want to over winter it quite yet as you want the roots to continue to grow and mature.

Put near a sunny window, keep the temp over 40 degrees all winter and you'll see some minor growth. Most of the growth will be in the roots.

If you try to overwinter a very small plant you'd have to protect it well, but there is a higher chance of freezing the roots and damaging or killing the plant.

But if the plant is over 14 inches tall I would recommend putting it in the basement. The leaves will fall off, but thats ok, it'll just rest.

Unless the plant is about 5 ft tall I would not recommend putting it outside this late in the season.

Was wondering what type of soil would be best if the little fig was to stay outside during autumn, but then in unheated garage for the winter -- potting soil? garden soil? advice appreciated, thx --
