This is my giant black german fig,2 years old,planted inground,zone 6,Cleveland,ohio.Doesn't taste very good,but....it's a winner for my climate area with a light winter protection. german black german black german black

That looks like a pretty decent fig. I would let it ripen on the tree for a few days to a week longer, at least until the sides start cracking, then I bet it would taste much better.

Ed is right I would also let it set and ripen until I see cracks on the skin. however at this time of year it may not develop the best flavor.

Marius:This fig will get earlyer in the next years,when will be older,so there is hope.
I also got a fig as Black German,But not (giant),yet I see it has similar leaves,and mine did not fruit,because it is too young.

Hi Rob5020.I cover my figs with old cotton clothes,leaf humus or mulch or...aged horse manure.On top i use CLEAR plastic bag with small holes to prevent condensation.Marius

I visited Germany last fall and found some large dark purple figs at the Munich street market. I sure would like to find out what kind they were and if they can be grown in NE Alabama.

Marius, just an update. Got 3 to root and it is a tremendous grower. I wouldn't be surprised if one gives me figs this year. Curious as to the background of this fig. Thanks

You welcome,guys.I will post the original reset of this fig.It was bought on Stuttgart by my brother in law(Jojanes,in 2008,april, and it says:"Grosse(don't have that german letter)schwartze feige"=giant black fig.Marius
