overwintering fig trees

I purchased a black marseilles fig tree this summer and planted it in my back yard. It is already about six feet high and bearing fruit. Can I successfully overwinter it in the ground? I'm in northern New Jersey outside NYC.

If I have to dig the tree up, pot it and bring it inside for the winter, I will do that. But I would rather not. And I don't know what I'll do when it grows to 10 or 12 feet high. Any suggestions would be welcome.

That variety did OK for me unprotected last winter so it may be fine. I did protect it for the first two years, but I had started it from a cutting so it was quite small until recently (its only 4' tall now).

More generally, if you can grow them outside uncovered thats the easiest obviously. If that doesn't work then the next best approach is to pot it up, but pots require more care such as watering and repotting.
