My Guilbeau is a large brown fig and very similar to my
Hollier_NOT (bought as a Hollier!). To my best recollection
a true Hollier should have a green skin. I did aquire
another Hollier from a second source, but it has not
fruited yet.

Thanks George

I had a Hollier but it got murdered by me with Roundup (I think)

My Guilbeau is really healthy and it is not going to see any Roundup near it!

Live & learn.

Again, Thanks
Cecil

Guilbeau & Hollier are NOT the same fig. That info on Ray Given's page is not correct. Hollier was bred at LSU.

Thanks Dan,

It was a sad day around here when I found out I had "did my Hollier in"
But thanks to a very nice member I have some Hollier & Adriatic (JH)cuttings to root in the Spring.

RE: Hollier & Guilbeau the same?

One of the things I like about Joe's Adriatic is that it tastes so good and those pesky birds have a hard time figuring out when it is ripe. Hollier is one that belongs in the super-sweet category. Because Dr. O'Rourke started with two great tasting, cold tolerant, rain tolerant, and bug resistant figs...Celeste and Hunt as the Mother figs....it is understandable why many of the LSU bred figs perform well and taste good (it's in their genes).

It is very unfortunate however that funding for his fig breeding program was cut way too early to allow him to finish his work and release his figs to the public in a controlled and timely manner. That would have eliminated the confusion that now exists with the cultivars that he bred. Quite a few of his figs went out the back door of his unfunded test orchards and now exist in private collections in South Louisiana. Because of this there are multiple strains of several of his figs.....Golden Celeste and Improved Celeste are two good examples. As a dedicated fig hunter, I have collected a few of those other little known LSU "sibling" figs. I can tell you there are some promising "new" cultivars yet to be distributed. I have not yet run across multiple strains of Hollier.....time will tell.

No snow on the ground this morning, but we did get some sleet last night, heavy frost this morning, with temperatures near freezing. Very unusual weather for this time of the year in South Louisiana. I will shocked if I get any more figs from my trees this season.....oh well, all good things eventually come to an end.

Well speaking of weather! When I got up this morning it was 19*F here, I thought of poor, cold Martin until I found out we were 4 (Four)degrees*F colder than he was in Chicago Land.

Hollier is a keeper for me. True to description by Dan. My Hollier started from cuttings gave me my 1st crop in year 2 and it is productive, like it gave me at least 20 figs on its 1st production. It has good branching qualities too. Just like Cecil, I am thankful to be given some nice variants to root or in plant form like Sal's EL, Genovese, Brog Bianco, Natalina, Martin's Unknown, Ayman's, Bifara, Gino, JH Adriatic, GM#5, LSU Everbearing, even a banana tree etc from some members in this forum. If I have space I guess I can end up having a collection like UCD germplasm. Thanks to all the wonderful fig friends.

Thanks to all who trial many fig cultivars and take the time to share their results on this forum. I really admire all who strive to grow good figs in those climates that are less than ideal for fig growing......especially those of you in Canada.

I am lucky to have good Fig friends!

And like I have said in the past...I NEVER forget!
