I would like to know if anyone has tried
to root fig cuttings in 100% of this medium?
Any comments as to advisability of doing this and if so,any tips or directions would be
appreciated. Thanks |

I did use SM (in the baggie method). Had better succes than the traditonal paper-towel. Everthing else (conditions) being the same. SM has a better moisture buffering property and also has a natural-anti-rotting stuff in it. No-self bragging here! I learned this from one of our Dr. Al's hints... |

| Sphagnum moss, N2BCW/sphagnum peat, is probably the best rooting medium you're likely to encounter. It's used for many horticultural applications and is probably by far the most preferred medium for air layering because of its ability to stimulate rapid root formation and inhibit fungaluglies.

This may help avoid some confusion betwen Spagnum Moss and Spagnum Peat Moss and explains the difference: http://www.peatmoss.com/sporo.php It is commonly available from nurseries and relatively big garden centres. |

| ejp3, Just about any if not all garden supply centers or nurseries carry it( approx $4 per bag on ave. ). I like it for the fact it has an anti-rotting agent. And stays moist much longer. Rafed |

| Does anyone have a picture of the proper way to wrap your cuttings in the moss? |

| Sphagnum moss is also widely used for growing orchids (I know I do!) so you can also find them at orchid supply shops. The New Zealand stuff is the best, but some of the Canadian ones are really good too! Very few other medium can hold so much air and water at the same time. And the anti-fungal/bacterial properties are a plus too. |

I too used sphagnum (sheet) moss to root cuttings by the baggie method. I had used it before to germinate very slow germinating seed and so assumed it would be anti-fungal. It worked beautifully. The figs rooted in the garage after about 6 weeks beginning in late February. It was darn cold and so I think some of that time the cuttings were waiting for the proper temperature. No special reason for the sheet sphagnum. It's just what I had on hand. Eventually developed the method of placing a rubber band loosely over the moss wrapping the cuttings (4-10 in a bunch) and cutting off the rubber bands each time I peeked at the cuttings because once I snapped off a root trying to remove the rubber band whole. Anyway the rubber bands are the right price, free. They come with the newspaper. For the most part the moss retained enough moisture without moistening again. The 1-2 that I did add water to, I got too wet. They didn't mold. They were just soppy wet. As to a source, I think florists as well as nurseries use and sell it. Cath |

I tend to use less SM in the bag; though more cannot hurt! I just first put some SM in the bag, then the twigs, followed with some more SM on top. I am not sure that the twigs need to be completely covered... |

| Do you use any water with this method? |

Not sure what you mean? Yes, water is required to moist the SM. |

Does a spray bottle add enough water, or how wet does the moss have to be? Thank you. TC |

TC Put moss in water for 10 min then squeez moss untill moist.I am taking this from directions on pkg that I bought from Walmart.I am sure this would be fine for your cuttings media.I plan to put my cuttings in 32 oz clear plastic container with the moss at about 70 degrees Since this is my first attempt you may want to ask others about their methods. Good luck with your rooting |
