Fig without branches

I'm new to fig growing. I have a 10 x 12 greenhouse that I have started keeping heated in the winter. The first fig that I bought was a "Negronne" from one of the general gardening catalogs. It is basically a 15 inch, brown stick with three leaves on top. The leaves are bigger and healthier looking than they were when it arrived in the spring, but there are no branches, at all.

I just ordered several more figs, from Logee's, which arrived today. These include Chicago Hardy, Ischia, and Celeste. They are all quite a bit shorter than my Negronne, but they have a lots of branches and large leaves.

I didn't think the Negronne was supposed to look like it does, but next to the others, it looks awful. Is it supposed to look like that? What can I do to encourage branching? I'm afraid to prune it this spring since that would require cutting off the only leaves it has. Should I prune it in the spring?
