Highly Variable Freeze Damage

We had our first freeze here. Down to about 28 F. These trees in my yard still had green leaves. They are northeast of my house.

It was interesting to me that 2 trees so close to each other had such different damage. The one on the left, untouched, is Hardy Chicago. The one on the right, with very freeze damaged leaves, was sold 13 years ago via mail order (Wayside, I think) as Petite negri but others have identified it as Aubique petite.

I also have Lattarula and King, in my south yard. Lattarula was undamaged by the freeze. King had some damage, but not severe.

Since they have not dropped their leaves, I assume these trees are not dormant. We'll see what happens to them this winter. Last year they all survived to 8 F, but were fully dormant at the time.
